The Shape of Oil, ArtSite Gallery, Windsor, CA

The Shape of Oil brings together the work of Samantha and Philip Gurrey, examining the naivety and ignorance embedded in the monetization of natural resources. They explore the blurred boundaries between the natural and the artificial, the comforting and the destructive. Both artists confront the deceptive sense of innocence tied to human-made materials—materials extracted and shaped through processes that prioritize profit over stewardship. The Shape of Oil invites viewers to look beyond the surface gloss of modern materials and confront the weight of their histories.

Samantha Gurrey, born 1988, received her BFA from York University and her Master’s Degree from the Glasgow School of Art. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and internationally. Selected exhibitions include: Glasgow International’s art biennale, UK; The Lume Media Centre in Helsinki, Finland; Palast der Produktion, Bremen, Germany; Graffit Gallery, Varna, Bulgaria; Bermondsey Project Space, London, UK and more recently the Art Gallery of Mississauga in Ontario.
